Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: W. Howard Doane
To the work! To the work! We are servants of God;
Let us follow the path that our Master has trod;
With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew,
Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.
Refrain
Toiling on, toiling on,
Toiling on, toiling on,
Let us hope and trust,
Let us watch and pray,
And labor till the Master comes.
To the work! To the work! Let the hungry be fed;
To the fountain of life let the weary be led;
In the cross and its banner our glory shall be,
While we herald the tidings, “Salvation is free!”
Refrain
To the work! To the work! There is labor for all;
For the kingdom of darkness and error shall fall;
And the love of our Father exalted shall be,
In the loud swelling chorus, “Salvation is free!”
Refrain
To the work! To the work! In the strength of the Lord,
And a robe and a crown shall our labor reward,
When the home of the faithful our dwelling shall be,
And we shout with the ransomed, “Salvation is free!”
Refrain

Frances Jane Crosby
(March 24 1820 – February 12 1915)
While Fanny Crosby enjoyed her poetry, she zealously memorized the Bible. Memorizing five chapters a week, even as a child she could recite the Pentateuch, the Gospels, Proverbs, the Song of Solomon, and many psalms chapter and verse.
Fanny's father passed away when she was very young and so she was raised by her mother and grandmother. Her mother worked hard as a maid and her grandmother stayed home to help raise Fanny. Her mother's hard work paid off. Shortly before her fifteenth birthday, Crosby was sent to the recently founded New York Institute for the Blind, which would be her home for 23 years. Fanny was at the institute for twelve years as a student and then continued on for another eleven years as a teacher.

REDEEMED, HOW I LOVE TO PROCLAIM IT!
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: William J. Kirkpatrick
Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child and forever I am.
Refrain
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.
Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.
Refrain
I think of my blessèd Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long:
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.
Refrain
I know there’s a crown that is waiting,
In yonder bright mansion for me,
And soon, with the spirits made perfect,
At home with the Lord I shall be.
Refrain
RESCUE THE PERISHING
Fanny J. Crosby
William Howard Doane
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
weep over the errin one, lift up the fallen,
tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
Refrain:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
Though they are slighting him, still he is waiting,
waiting the penitent child to receive;
plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently;
he will forgive if they only believe. Refrain
Refrain:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
Down in the human heart, crushed by the tempter,
feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness,
chords that were broken will vibrate once more.
Refrain:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
strength for thy labor the Lord will provide;
back to the narrow way patiently win them;
tell the poor wanderer a Savior has died.
Refrain:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying,
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
SAVED BY GRACE
“Ever the silver cord be loosed…then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall
return unto God Who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:6-7
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: George C. Stebbins
Some day the silver cord will break,
And I no more as now shall sing;
But oh, the joy when I shall wake
Within the palace of the King!
Refrain
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—Saved by grace;
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—Saved by grace.
Some day my earthly house will fall.
I cannot tell how soon ’twill be;
But this I know—my All in All
Has now a place in Heav’n for me.
Refrain
Some day, when fades the golden sun
Beneath the rosy tinted west,
My blessèd Lord will say, “Well done!”
And I shall enter into rest.
Refrain
Some day: till then I’ll watch and wait,
My lamp all trimmed and burning bright,
That when my Savior opens the gate,
My soul to Him may take its flight.
Refrain
THOUGH YOUR SINS BE AS SCARLET
“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” Isaiah 1:18
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: W. Howard Doane
“Though your sins be as scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though your sins be as scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they be red like crimson,
They shall be as wool!”
“Though your sins be as scarlet,
Though your sins be as scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow,
They shall be as white as snow.”
Hear the voice that entreats you,
O return ye unto God!
Hear the voice that entreats you,
O return ye unto God!
He is of great compassion,
And of wondrous love;
Hear the voice that entreats you,
Hear the voice that entreats you,
O return ye unto God!
O return ye unto God!
He’ll forgive your transgressions,
And remember them no more;
He’ll forgive your transgressions,
And remember them no more;
“Look unto Me, ye people,”
Saith the Lord your God!
He’ll forgive your transgressions,
He’ll forgive your transgressions,
And remember them no more,
TO GOD BE THE GLORY
PRAISE THE LORD
“God and our Father: To Whom be glory for ever.” Galatians 1:4-5
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: W. Howard Doane
To God be the glory, great things He has done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Refrain
Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
Refrain
THY WORD HAVE I HID IN MY HEART
Psalm 119:11
One important thing that I discovered as I researched information about Fanny Crosby for some new music pages this week is that she began as a child memorizing long portions of the bible. I feel sure that this habit was a greatly contributing factor in her ability to compose the words to the poetry and hymns she wrote.
When I was a child I was privileged to be a member of an organization for girls known at that time as “Girl’s Auxiliary” or “GA’s. It was primarily a missionary society and grew out of the great "Women’s Missionary Union" or "WMU" of the Southern Baptist Convention. It was a great place for young girl’s to learn about mission work being done at the time and about the historical and on going significance of world wide missions.
One of the main pinions of this organization was it’s strong emphasis on memorization of bible scriptures. I benefitted so much by learning very early in my life to memorize chapters of the bible (It was so much easier to memorize things when I was a child). I thank God that I did memorize scripture in those early days. The precious words I learned have remained so dear to me throughout my life.
I have been through some very difficult times in my life. My first husband died very suddenly just a few days after our tenth wedding anniversary when I was only twenty seven years old. Then our only child was killed when he was only fifteen years old. I found in the dark days just after those terrible happenings that the scriptures that were embedded in my mind were sometimes the only patches of comfort I could find in my head and in my heart.
When I was a child my parents were very involved in church. I went to church and heard the hymns of the church sung several times a week for many, many years. The words of hymns are largely reminiscent of Holy Scripture especially the hymns written by Fanny Crosby, and they too have always been a great source of comfort to me. When all else seemed to fail in my life the sounds of inspiration and strength found in remembered passages of scriipture and favorite hymn melodies and words from my childhood faith washed up around me like an ocean of GOD’s love. I found reassurance of the promises that I would someday see my loved ones again in Heaven and strength to face the future.
About ten years ago I was suddenly stricken with a debilitating illness which affects the central nervous system and I have been confined to a wheel chair now for about ten years. I am not all that old ( not eligible for medicare yet) and for a time I thought that not being able to work ( I ran my own Retail Jewelry business for over twenty years) was the end of the world.
I remember waking in a hospital bed and feeling helpless searching my mind for some sense of direction. There was no place to go, no apparent way to reason why this was happening to me. I found again that repeating the words I had memorized in my childhood was of great solace in the great darkness of depression I began to experience.
Through the last few years I have begun to understand that my illness has been a blessing in disguise. I have now the time to contemplate the wondrous glory of God’s goodness. I am more able to understand what Fanny Crosby meant when she wrote:
Oh what a happy soul I am,
Although I cannot see;
I am resolved that in this world
Contented I will be.
How many blessings I enjoy,
other people don't;
To weep and sigh because I'm blind,
I cannot, and I won't."
God created man for fellowship. So often in our busy lives we forget that basic fact. It is sad that it often takes tragedy to bring us to our knees and lead us once again to the throne of God weeping and broken. It is however so wonderful to find hidden in the back corridors of our mind the sounds of our faith. These are so often the scriptures we memorize, and hymns we sing in our childhood. Gloriously they remain in our mind day and night; wonderful sounds which ultimately remind us over and over again of God's Love.
I cannot help but think of the words of what I believe is one of the best hymns that
Fanny Crosby ever wrote, "I Am Thine O' Lord".
The obscure third verse we never sing is so beautiful:
"O the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessèd Lord,To the cross where Thou hast died.
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessèd Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side."

TELL ME THE STORY OF JESUS
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: John R. Sweney
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels in chorus,
Sang as they welcomed His birth.
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”
Refrain
Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.
Fasting alone in the desert,
Tell of the days that are past.
How for our sins He was tempted,
Yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor,
Tell of the sorrow He bore.
He was despised and afflicted,
Homeless, rejected and poor.
Refrain
Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
Writhing in anguish and pain.
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
Tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
Clearer than ever I see.
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
Love paid the ransom for me.
Refrain

Initially she indulged in her own poetry and was called upon to pen verses for various occasions. It was not long until her poetry attracted national attention and Fanny became friends with many political, and business leaders of her time. By age 23 Crosby was addressing Congress and making friendships with presidents. In fact, she knew all the chief executives of her lifetime, especially Grover Cleveland, who served as secretary for the Institute for the Blind before his election.
Fanny's husband who was also blind was a famous organist and he wrote the music for many of Fanny's poems. Fanny was herself a very gifted musician. She played harp, piano, guitar, and other instruments.
More often, musicians came to her for lyrics. For example, one day musician William Doane dropped by her home for a surprise visit, begging her to put some words to a tune he had recently written and which he was to perform at an upcoming Sunday School convention. The only problem was that his train to the convention was leaving in 35 minutes. He sat at the piano and played the tune. "Your music says, 'Safe in the Arms of Jesus,'" Crosby said, scribbling out the hymn's words immediately. "Read it on the train and hurry. You don't want to be late!" The hymn became one of Crosby's most famous.
She could write very complex hymns and compose music with a more classical structure (she could even improvise it), but she preferred to write simple, sentimental verses that could be used for evangelism. She continued to write her poetry up to her death, a month shy of her ninety-fifth birthday. "You will reach the river brink, some sweet day, bye and bye," was her last stanza. She was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1975.
Even in her old age, she stated: I have not for a moment, in more than eighty-five years, felt a spark of resentment against him (the guilty doctor who was responsible for her blindness) because I have always believed from my youth to this very moment that the good Lord, in his infinite mercy by this means consecrated me to the work that I am still permitted to do. When I remember his mercy and loving kindness; when I have been blessed above the common lot of mortals; and when happiness has touched the deep places of my soul, how can I repine?

SAFE IN THE ARMS OF JESUS
Words: Frances J. Crosby
Music: William H. Doan
Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast,
There by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest.
Hark! ’tis the voice of angels, borne in a song to me.
Over the fields of glory, over the jasper sea.
Refrain
Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast
There by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest.
Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe from corroding care,
Safe from the world’s temptations, sin cannot harm me there.
Free from the blight of sorrow, free from my doubts and fears;
Only a few more trials, only a few more tears!
Refrain
Jesus, my heart’s dear Refuge, Jesus has died for me;
Firm on the Rock of Ages, ever my trust shall be.
Here let me wait with patience, wait till the night is over;
Wait till I see the morning break on the golden shore.
Refrain
This beautiful hymn was played
at the funeral of President U. S. Grant in 1885

TREAD SOFTLY
“Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for He is raised up out of
His holy habitation.” Zechariah 2:13
Words: Fanny Crosby
Music: W. Howard Doane
Be silent, be silent,
A whisper is heard,
Be silent, and listen,
O treasure each word!
Refrain
Tread softly, tread softly,
The Master is here,
Tread softly, tread softly,
He bids us draw near.
Be silent, be silent,
For holy this place,
This altar that echoes
The message of grace.
Refrain
Be silent, be silent,
Breathe humbly our prayer,
A foretaste of Eden
This moment we share.
Refrain
Be silent, be silent,
His mercy record,
Be silent, be silent
And wait on the Lord.
Refrain
